Regarding the benefits inherent to the use of composite materials in large-length vessels, there are several from the point of view of the operation, maintenance and other aspects of the FRP vessel life cycle:
- The non-existence of corrosion results in a better life cycle performance and a corresponding reduction in maintenance costs on account of this phenomenon.
- Continuous structural health monitoring, which leads to a better understanding of the structural behaviour of FRP large length vessels.
- Better underwater acoustic signature of fibre-based vessels due to the better capability of damping resonant vibrations (in terms of structural damping loss factor) produced by vibration sources (main engines, propellers, equipment, etc.).
- Possibility of using wireless sensors, avoiding “Faraday cage” effects in contrast to the metallic-based vessel.
