FRP materials and construction processes proposed in FIBRESHIP will attempt to improve the efficiency of vessels, both in terms of energy consumption and maintenance costs, offering better solutions for the Maritime Sector.

Considering the acquired experience in small‐length vessels and naval ships building, a significant weight reduction can be achieved giving several advantages.

As an example of the potential benefits for shipowners due to the weight reduction by using composites in large length vessels, it is identified the reduction of fuel consumption due to the need of a smaller power plant or the increasing of payload cargo capacity of the vessel to compensate this weight reduction with deadweight. The use of a smaller power plant also means a reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, being a contribution to the pollution reduction.

Other benefits are related to the immunity to corrosion (with the corresponding reduction in OPEX) as well as the potential reduction of underwater radiated noise thanks to the higher damping properties of composites.
